These are the functions that create a significant competitive advantage for the business.
For Mint.com, it was the design of the website. For FedEx it was the ability to deliver on-time, every time.
It is very worthwhile for any business to stop and consider its critical functions.
By knowing the critical function the business can focus the needed resources and care necessary.
In converse, it is important not to allocate significant resources or focus on functions that are not critical.
For example, it makes no sense to make a lawyer a co-founder for a startup unless its' differentiation stems from legal understanding.
By understanding critical functions we can become better at focusing our efforts on the tasks and activities that matter most.
